Forensic accountants are fully trained, qualified accountants with years of experience in accounting and business operations. Some have postgraduate qualifications in forensic accounting and others are accredited as forensic accountants by their professional accountancy body or are members of either the Academy ofExperts or the Expert Witness Register. Forensic accountants’ experience of business, finance and accounting practices means they are able to analyse and interpret large volumes of financial data, including bank records, business documents and financial transactions. They also employ a number of data mining techniques during their investigation work of records, such as Benford’s law to unmask any anomalies within the financial records and transaction postings.

Forensic accountants use their knowledge and expertise in finance and accounting, with their investigative skills to quantify or challenge a claim amount. With the relevant experience, a forensic accountant may also present evidence in a courtroom as an expert witness. They can help with determining the quantum of a financial claim in avariety of cases, such as insurance, matrimonial, criminal and civil fraud.
